Real Wood vs. Poly vs. Hunter Douglas Polysatin Shutters in Palm Beach County

Short answer: Architectural Plantation Shutters (AP Shutters) builds custom real-wood (basswood) plantation shutters in its own shop in Palm City, Florida, and measures and installs them across northern Palm Beach County, including Jupiter, Tequesta, Palm Beach Gardens, Juno Beach, North Palm Beach and West Palm Beach. Hunter Douglas Palm Beach™ Polysatin™ shutters are a different product: Hunter Douglas describes them as vinyl shutters made from its Polysatin compound with interior aluminum bracing, sold and installed through authorized dealers. This guide explains the differences so you can compare quotes on the same terms.
The name causes confusion. "Palm Beach" in Palm Beach Polysatin is a product name. It does not mean the shutters are made in Palm Beach County, and Hunter Douglas does not state on its product page where they are made.
Three different products that look alike
In a showroom, a painted wood shutter, a poly shutter and a Hunter Douglas Polysatin shutter can look almost the same in white. The differences are in what is inside the panel, who builds it and who services it later.
1. Real wood (basswood) shutters
- Material: solid hardwood, usually basswood, painted or stained.
- Strength: relatively light for its stiffness, which helps on wide and tall hinged panels.
- Custom work: wood can be shaped for arches, sunbursts, angled tops, door cutouts and matching trim.
- Moisture: paint protects wood but does not waterproof it. Wood suits air-conditioned rooms and dry bathroom windows, not windows inside a shower.
- Repair: louvers, joints and finishes can often be repaired or refinished.
2. Generic poly, PVC or vinyl shutters
- Material: "poly" is a retail term, not one material. It can mean solid PVC, hollow or foamed vinyl, ABS, a composite or a hybrid.
- Moisture: synthetic shutters resist water well, which is why they are used in showers and splash zones.
- Weight and span: solid PVC can be heavier than wood; many products add aluminum reinforcement or use narrower panels.
- Color and shape: options depend on the manufacturer's system; many lines are offered in a set range of whites.
3. Hunter Douglas Palm Beach™ Polysatin™
According to Hunter Douglas's product page, Palm Beach Polysatin shutters are vinyl shutters made from a Polysatin compound, with interior aluminum bracing and resin blocks for strength. Hunter Douglas lists louver sizes of 2½, 3½ and 4½ inches, describes the shutters as water resistant and UV resistant, and backs them with its Palm Beach Promise™ and a lifetime guarantee. The product page shows the shutters in white. Hunter Douglas also sells other shutter lines, including NewStyle® hybrid shutters, which it describes as combining wood and modern materials. These products are sold, measured and installed by independent authorized dealers.
Side-by-side: what to compare
Who builds the shutter
- AP Shutters: built in our own shop at 3475 SW Palm City School Ave., Palm City, FL, since January 1991.
- Hunter Douglas Palm Beach: manufactured by Hunter Douglas and sold through dealers. The dealer measures and installs; the factory builds.
- Generic poly: depends on the brand; often built at a national factory and installed by a local dealer or installer.
What is inside the panel
- AP Shutters: basswood, painted in our own paint booth. For windows inside a shower we also offer poly/PVC shutters.
- Hunter Douglas Palm Beach: Polysatin vinyl compound with interior aluminum bracing and resin blocks (per Hunter Douglas).
- Generic poly: ask for the exact material in writing: solid, hollow or reinforced.
Louvers and tilt
- AP Shutters: 3½-inch or 4½-inch louvers; visible tilt rod or hidden tilt; split tilt for separate upper and lower control. Final options depend on the window.
- Hunter Douglas Palm Beach: 2½, 3½ or 4½-inch louvers (per Hunter Douglas).
Color and custom shapes
- Real wood: can be painted a custom color or stained, and refinished later. Arches and specialty shapes are built to a template of the window.
- Vinyl and poly: color range is set by the manufacturer. Specialty shapes depend on what the manufacturer's system offers.
Moisture
- Real wood: for conditioned rooms and dry bathroom windows. Not for direct shower spray.
- Vinyl and poly: the stronger choice inside showers and other wet locations.
Warranty
- AP Shutters: our limited lifetime warranty covers the shutter and its painted finish against cracking, warping and structural defects under normal residential use, and covers the tilt-rod mechanism for life; hidden-tilt mechanisms carry a one-year warranty. Full terms are on our FAQ page.
- Hunter Douglas Palm Beach: lifetime guarantee and Palm Beach Promise, as stated by Hunter Douglas. Ask your dealer who handles service labor.
Installation and service
- AP Shutters: our price includes installation by our own crew. The same company measures, builds, installs and services the shutters.
- Dealer-sold brands: installation and service are handled by the dealer. Ask who you call if a louver breaks in five years.
Which one fits your Palm Beach County home?
- Choose real wood for living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms, wide or tall windows, arches and sunbursts, custom colors, and when you want shutters that match existing trim.
- Choose vinyl or poly for windows inside a shower, splash zones, and rooms where you want a wipe-clean surface above all.
- Mix them when it makes sense. Many homes use painted wood in the main rooms and a wet-location shutter in the shower. Ask for the same louver size and a matching white so the house still looks consistent.
How to tell who actually makes a shutter
Many companies sell plantation shutters in Palm Beach County. Fewer build them. If it matters to you that the shutter is made locally, ask these questions before you sign:
- Where is the shutter built, and can I visit the shop?
- What exactly is the panel made of: wood species, solid PVC, hollow vinyl or reinforced composite?
- Who measures, who installs and who services the shutters later?
- Is installation included in the price?
- What does the warranty cover, and who pays for service labor?
- Can I see finished projects in my area?
