Client Requirements

Keep the arch visible and coordinate the other rooms

This PGA Village home in Port St. Lucie combined an arched window with tall openings, standard-height windows and a dining room facing the pool. The owners wanted the arch treated in a way that respected its shape, rather than covering it with a straight treatment across the bottom.

They also wanted the dining room, bedroom and living spaces to share one finish. The challenge was therefore both geometric and visual: fit a curved opening accurately while making the arch part of the same shutter design as the rectangular windows elsewhere in the home.

The design requirements

  • Build a shutter that follows the half-round arch.
  • Coordinate the finish and frame profile with the other rooms.
  • Fit tall, wide and standard-height openings without losing their individual proportions.

The project photograph shows the arched window shutter behind a table lamp. It provides a clear example of the sunburst arrangement used for the half-round opening.

What We Did?

A sunburst arch with matching real-wood panels

We built a custom sunburst arch with louvers radiating from the center point of the half-round. The arch was matched to wide-louver panels throughout the rest of the home using the same finish and frame profile. All of the shutters were real wood and built in Palm City.

The curved, tall and wide openings each retained their own proportions while sharing the same architectural style. The arch was treated as a measured shape, rather than forced into the panel arrangement used for a rectangular window.

What to compare in the photograph

Look at the way the louvers follow the half-round and how the frame relates to the curve. In a specialty-shape project, those details explain more than a generic product photo. They show the fitted arrangement selected for this opening, without implying that every arch needs the same layout.

Planning an arched-window project in PGA Village

Identify the entire opening, including any rectangular section below an arch. Discuss whether the arch and lower window should be separate parts of the design and how the chosen treatment will be used for light and privacy. Specialty-shape operation varies by layout, so ask for an explanation of the actual proposed design rather than assuming it works exactly like a standard hinged panel.

When other windows are part of the project, review the frame profile and finish alongside the arch. A shared specification can connect the different rooms, while separate measurements preserve the correct fit for each opening. Photographs of completed specialty work can help make that discussion more concrete.

Bring a view of the whole wall

For an arched opening, a close-up of the curve is useful, but a photograph of the whole wall adds context. It shows the lower window, nearby openings and surrounding trim that the shutter design must relate to. Use both views when discussing your own project, then have the actual opening measured before the layout is finalized. Ask which sections of the proposed treatment are adjustable and how they will be reached. These details help you compare a specialty-shape proposal with the way you intend to use the room, while the photograph of this PGA Village installation provides a concrete example of the sunburst appearance.
