Client Requirements
A family in Heritage Ridge, Hobe Sound, came to AP Shutters through a referral. They wanted plantation shutters on the sliding glass door in the dining area, the windows in the primary bedroom, a nursery and a second bedroom. AP Shutters installed the shutters in April 2023.
The family also wanted to keep their curtains. The shutters had to work behind the existing curtain rods, and the slider had to stay easy to open, because it is the way out to the back patio and yard.

What We Did?
Slider panels that let the family keep using the door
The sliding glass door opens from the dining area to the patio and yard. We built full-height shutter panels for the door in our Palm City shop. With the louvers open, the family still sees the yard from the table; with the louvers closed, the dining room gets privacy at night. The panels move clear of the door when the family wants to walk outside.
The family kept their sheer curtains on the existing rod in front of the slider. The shutters sit behind them, so the room looks the way they had decorated it, with the shutters doing the light control.
Bedrooms and a nursery
The primary bedroom has three windows, and each one received its own shutter, so the owners can open one window for light and keep the others closed. In the nursery, a single-panel shutter on the window next to the crib lets the parents close the louvers fully at nap time. The second bedroom kept its navy drapes, with the shutter behind them.
Why shutters and curtains can work together
Many owners assume shutters replace curtains. In this home they did not have to. If there is room between the curtain rod and the window, a shutter can sit inside the window opening while the curtains hang in front. The shutter handles privacy and glare; the fabric adds color. We check rod position and clearance at the measure.
Planning notes for sliders and bedrooms
- On a slider, decide where the panels will sit when the door is open before choosing a layout.
- Check the handle and lock so the panels clear them.
- For nurseries and bedrooms, ask about louver size and how fully the louvers close.
- If you are keeping curtains, show us the rods at the measure so we can check the clearance.

Can I keep my curtains with plantation shutters? Often, yes. If the rod leaves enough room in front of the window, the shutter fits inside the opening and the curtains hang in front, as in this home.
Are shutters on a sliding glass door hard to use? They should not be. The panel layout is planned around how the door is used, so the way outside stays clear.
